Hormonal Conditions

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

  • PCOS is a common condition present in up to 20% of people who menstruate. It can present as a combination of the following symptoms:
  • Irregular or infrequent menstruation
  • Lack of ovulation
  • Skin changes (acne and darkening of the skin)
  • Hair changes (growth and/or loss)
  • Weight gain
  • Increased anxiety and depression
  • Potential for cysts on ovaries
  • Difficulty becoming pregnant
  • Sleep apnoea
  • Insulin resistance
  • No dietary pattern is known to be the “best” for helping manage PCOS – you need to find what works for you with the guidance of a health professional.

Hypothalamic Amenorrhoea

  • Hypothalamic amenorrhoea (HA) is a form of chronic anovulation - HA is tricky to diagnose as it can easily be confused with PCOS, and sometimes people have both.
  • HA is often associated with stress, weight loss and excessive exercise, or a combination, so often it is seen amongst recreational athletes who do not consume adequate calories each day.
  • It is important to address HA before any damage is done to your bones and heart, which is possible if left untreated for too long.

Endometriosis

  • Endometriosis is a common condition in which endometrial-like tissue grows outside the uterus, which can lead to pain and other complications, like infertility.
  • The treatment for endometriosis is a laparoscopic surgery, however, there is now more evidence about how nutrition and dietary management of this condition can help manage symptoms and slow the progression of endometriosis growing.
  • The symptoms vary between individuals, but can include:
  • Pelvic pain, especially around the menstrual cycle
  • Pain during sex
  • Abdominal, back or pelvic pain
  • Heavy or irregular bleeding
  • Bleeding longer than normal
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Changes in urination habits
  • Bloating
  • Tiredness or low energy, especially around your period

Menopause

  • Menopause is defined as the final menstrual period. This is caused by a shift in sex hormones preventing the ovaries from releasing anymore eggs, which leads to a drop in hormones; oestrogen and progesterone.
  • This normally happens between the ages of 45-55, however for some it may occur prematurely (before 45 years of age), earlier (before 40 years of age), due to surgery (hysterectomy), cancer treatments or primary ovarian insufficiency.
  • Perimenopause is the period before you reach natural menopause where your ovaries begin to run out of eggs, and symptoms are likely to begin here:
  • Hot flushes
  • Memory changes
  • Mood changes
  • Vaginal changes
  • Weight gain
  • It is important to care for your body during these changes, especially looking after your bone health. I can support you through this time with nutrition and movement.
